Arranging accommodation before you fly

Arriving in a new country without confirmed accommodation adds unnecessary stress in the first week, so we encourage students to secure at least short-term housing before departure. This might be university halls of residence, a booking through a verified student housing platform, or a short initial stay that gives time to view shared accommodation in person once settled.

We talk students through what to check before paying any deposit — whether the landlord or platform is verified, what the contract says about the notice period, and whether bills are included — since deposit scams targeting new international students are a recurring problem in several destination cities.

Booking flights and understanding ticketing rules

We advise on timing a flight booking against the visa's validity start date and the university's specified arrival window, since arriving too early or too late can create complications with both immigration and accommodation check-in dates. Baggage allowances for international student tickets are often more generous than standard economy fares, and we help students check this before packing so nothing valuable gets left behind for excess baggage reasons.

Foreign exchange and carrying money safely

Carrying large amounts of cash is neither necessary nor advisable. We guide students on setting up an international-friendly bank card or prepaid forex card before departure, on the customs declaration limits for carrying foreign currency out of Pakistan, and on keeping a small amount of local currency for the destination country available for the first day or two before a local account is opened.

What to pack and what to leave behind

Students frequently overpack clothing suited to Pakistan's climate and underpack for the destination's weather, particularly for winters in the UK, Canada and parts of Europe. We share destination-specific packing guidance and remind students to carry originals of all academic and visa documents in hand luggage rather than checked baggage.

Arrival briefing and first-week checklist

Before departure we run through a first-week checklist covering airport arrival procedures, registering with the university, opening a local bank account, and, where relevant, collecting a Biometric Residence Permit or completing similar post-arrival registration required by the destination country. This session also covers who to contact — university international office, local emergency numbers, and our own team — if something goes wrong in the first days after arrival.
